What is paintball?
Paintball is a very vigorous sport in which participants join in playing a variety of games using markers (guns) that fire paintballs. Paintballs are round, thin-skinned, gelatin capsules filled with non-caustic, water-soluble, biodegradable dye that comes in many colors. The games are basically a type of hide-and-seek elimination. It's each player's objective to mark the opposition before getting shot himself. At Pearl River Paintball, these games are played in our outdoor speedball arena and in 40 acres of dense woods.
How safe is playing paintball?
Although the potential for injury is present, as with all action sports, understanding and following safety rules greatly minimizes any risk of harm. It cannot be over-emphasized that players must ALWAYS wear protective goggles over their faces, unless in designated areas. Use of barrel blocking devices is also at the top of the safety list. Any player ignoring safety procedures runs the risk of being ejected from the field.
Who plays paintball?
Paintball is a team sport played by men and women of all ages and from all types of lifestyles. Children must be at least 10 years of age to play, and a parent or guardian must sign a waiver for anyone to participate who is between the ages of ten and seventeen. A person's physical size and strength actually take a backseat to someone who has the ability to think strategically. Participants engage in quick sprints during some of the games and should gauge play to their level of fitness. Anyone in poor physical condition or having limited health conditions should consult a physician before playing paintball.
Does it hurt to get shot?
Paintballs break upon contact, but most of the time the player is not even aware of being hit. When a paintball does impact against the bare skin or through clothing, the player generally experiences a stinging sensation that goes away after a few seconds. Before play, each marker is chronographed to shoot paintballs within a specific speed range. Markers that shoot "hot" are a serious safety hazard and will not be tolerated. Pearl River Paintball also enforces a minimum firing distance of 15 feet.
What should I wear?
Wear comfortable, loose clothing according to weather conditions; however, long sleeves and pants afford more protection. Also, it is recommended that men wear a cup and women wear a padded bra. Camouflage clothing is, of course, a favorite with many players for the added advantage of concealment. Some players prefer to wear lightweight, canvas-topped boots for ankle support when playing in the woods, while others prefer athletic shoes for running.
